Celebrating the life of
George Andrew Minster
March 01, 1919 - October 18, 2014
A Righteous and Godly Man
George Andrew Minster passed away peacefully on the morning of October 18, 2014 from natural causes at the age of 95. George was surrounded and comforted by family and friends at Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties in Franklin Ohio. George resided with his granddaughter, Margaret Phillips and her family in Liberty Township Ohio for the past 5 years.
George was born in Ruffsdale, PA on March 1, 1919. He was the son of Mary R. Minster and Earnest J. Minster. Like his brothers, Earnest (Ernie) and Robert (Bobby), George joined the US Army in April 1941 and later married, Margaret Elizabeth Griffin on September 1, 1942. George proudly served his country during World War 2 and participated in the liberation of several concentration camps in Europe. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, George began a career at Union Camp (later International Paper) where he quickly rose to a supervisory position and earned great respect and admiration from his peers, employees and upper management.
It's been said that Love and Compassion are the Mother and Father of all smiles. George had love and compassion coursing through his veins and it showed with every smile he made. George's smile could light up a room, warm your heart or make you feel like the most important person in the Universe. George led a life to which most could only aspire and he did so with no regrets.
George is preceded in death by his wife of over 67 years, Margaret Elizabeth Minster and their only child, Mary Elizabeth Minster, his brothers, Ernie Minster and Bobby Minster and his sisters, Dorothy Kachmar and Eleanor Deglman, his father, Earnest Minster and his mother, Mary Minster.
George is survived by his granddaughter, Margaret Phillips and her husband, Eddie Phillips of Liberty Township Ohio, his great grandchildren, Greg Phillips, Katherine Phillips and Robert Phillips of Liberty Township Ohio. In addition, George is survived by his grandson, John Blase of Savannah Georgia along with his great grandchildren, Chase Blase and Price Blase of Savannah Georgia.
George was a righteous and Godly man. He was dearly loved and will be missed by everyone that knew him.
A graveside funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 24, 2014 at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park Cemetery.
I can't add much to George's obituary as it pretty much describes this gentle man. As a young supervisor, I considered my self very lucky to have been assigned to work with George on his shift. He quickly became one of my mentors. He taught me to respect those we managed and in turn they had great respect for him. He was like family to everybody that knew him. In recent years, we would meet both him and his granddaughter Marti for dinner on each trip he made back to Savannah. We always looked forward to seeing him and will greatly miss him. Every now and then someone comes in you life that you want to always remember as being such a special person. George touch many of our lives and will always be remembered. On a personal note, I will never forget him teaching me how to wear a paper poncho in a hard rain. A joke we shared and he still had a laugh about it when I told Marti. For those of us that had the privilege to have known George, we are all the better for having him as a friend. Again, he will be sadly missed by both Gail and me.

John and Marti -- I grew up two blocks from your grandparents on Screven Avenue. My dad and Mr. Minster worked together for many years and my parents (Hoke and Gladys Smith) were great friends with your grandparents. Beth was one of my best friends in high school; and I was always made welcome in their home. We lost touch, as friends often do, but had reconnected in the year before her death. She was a happy person and so proud of you both. I visited with your grandparents at the hospital and a number of times later and know that you were close to both of them. Your tribute to your grandfather was so loving. He was, indeed, a kind man, and this tribute reflects the person he was. I pray that your memories of these lovely people will remain always with you; and that you will share them with your children.

My sincere condolences to the family during this time of bereavement and know that death will be no more Revelation 21:3,4. So my the God of comfort grant you his peace while we await that day when he will wipe the tears from all faces.
